The Enugu State Police have taken into custody a 24-year-old man named Ugwu Desmond for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in the Affa community of Udi Local Government Area.
According to the spokesperson for the police command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the 30-year-old victim, who has not been named, had gone for a short walk back home from a neighbor's house on the night of March 14, 2026. However, what began as a simple stroll transformed into a horrifying experience.
Unbeknownst to her, she was being followed and was suddenly approached from behind by the assailant, who was wielding a cutlass. He forced her to the ground, attempted to strangle her, and silenced her screams by covering her mouth. The suspect then dragged her into an abandoned building, threatening to kill her if she resisted, before brutally raping her and inflicting multiple injuries.
Her ability to survive and her courage to report the assault at approximately 6:15 a.m. on March 15, 2026, prompted immediate action from the police. Officers from the Affa Police Division quickly mobilized, leading to the suspect's arrest. Following the report, the victim was rushed to a hospital for medical care, and the site of the attack was examined, resulting in the collection of vital evidence, including the cutlass used in the crime and clothing found with suspected blood and seminal stains.
Ndukwe also indicated that the suspect has admitted to the charges against him. The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has mandated a comprehensive investigation and assured that the suspect will be brought before the court as soon as enquiries are finalized.
