ABU Center Provides Training on Sustainable Procurement for Professionals

The Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement Centre of Excellence (SPESSE-CE) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has organized a training program for professionals focused on sustainable procurement practices. This effort is part of a broader initiative to foster transparency, accountability, and environmental responsibility in various sectors.

The training aimed to equip attendees with essential knowledge and tools to integrate environmental and social standards into their procurement processes.

Professor Wisdom Japhet, the Centre Director and leader of SPESSE-CE, emphasized the importance of developing a new wave of professionals attuned to sustainability in procurement practices.

Professor Maikudi Yusuf, the Academic Coordinator of the Procurement Management Node, elaborated that the structure of the training encompasses both theoretical insights and practical applications, enabling participants to gain valuable hands-on experience.

Engr. Lawal Salisu, the centre coordinator, highlighted the need for procurement practices to align with global environmental and social standards.

Participants expressed their enthusiasm for the program, viewing it as an avenue to enhance their professional skills and contribute effectively to their organizations. Muhammed Aliyu, one of the attendees, remarked that the training would boost his understanding of sustainable procurement techniques.

Adeyemi Monisade also noted the potential for improved efficiency and accountability in procurement processes thanks to the knowledge acquired from the training.

Meanwhile, Lara Olaniyi recognized that the program provides insightful strategies for incorporating environmental considerations into everyday professional practices.

Established to cultivate expertise in environmental and procurement disciplines, the SPESSE-CE at ABU Zaria responds to identified skills deficiencies as highlighted by the World Bank and the National Universities Commission.
