The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially approved a comprehensive timetable for congresses across the nation, which will kick off on April 7 at polling units and wards.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's National Publicity Secretary, shared this information shortly after the NEC convened on Wednesday in Abuja. He also mentioned that key committees’ reports were endorsed during the meeting.
Mr. Abdullahi revealed that the NEC meeting was brief yet effective, achieving full attendance among necessary members.
He noted that no essential stakeholders were missing from the gathering.
The NEC approved the reports from the Policy and Manifesto Committee that had previously been passed to the National Working Committee (NWC) for review. Additionally, the NEC discussed the report from the Constitutional Review Committee, which will also be presented during the National Convention set for April 14.
According to him, these reports lay out the party's policy direction and constitutional framework essential for shaping the ADC's future political and governance missions.
He further announced that local government congresses are slated for April 9, with state congresses to follow on April 11, culminating in the national convention in Abuja.
The ADC spokesperson confirmed that guidelines for the congresses are already disseminated nationwide, and forms have been made available to promote inclusivity and active participation.
He assured that party members vying for different positions will encounter equal opportunities, highlighting an open, transparent, and accessible process for all qualified individuals.
The NEC meeting included representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which provided credibility and oversight to the proceedings.
Clarifying the purpose of the upcoming national convention, Mr. Abdullahi emphasized that it will not be an elective gathering and will not introduce new officers or candidates. Instead, it aims to ratify decisions earlier made by the NEC and the NWC since the last convention cycle.
He reiterated that elections for party officers are scheduled during the congresses at the grassroots level, covering polling units, wards, local government, and state phases.
Additionally, Mr. Abdullahi indicated that a convention committee has already been formed, with future details to be coordinated by the national organizing secretary.
In his opening address, National Chairman David Mark welcomed attendees to the second NEC meeting of the party, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaborative leadership.
Mr. Mark referred to the meeting as a significant occasion, commending the dedication and sacrifices made by members in fortifying the ADC.
He urged members to prioritize unity and to elevate beyond personal interests, while also advocating for discipline, internal solidarity, and adherence to democratic values.
He called for increased grassroots outreach, asserting that the party should engage effectively with Nigerians across different backgrounds, beliefs, and generations to broaden its national appeal.
"Our mission is clear: to reposition the ADC as a powerful platform for national revitalization and inclusive governance," he asserted.
Mr. Mark acknowledged the state chairpersons for their commitment to dialogue, noting their choice for consultation despite the challenges faced.
He added that collective efforts are essential to rescue Nigeria from its current difficulties.
