Prince Adewole Adebayo, who previously ran for president under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has praised the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki as a patriotic individual whose existence epitomized service, discipline, and the core values of democratic governance.
Adebayo expressed his sorrow in a touching statement, emphasizing that Akwashiki’s death is not only a significant loss for the inhabitants of Nasarawa North but also for the entire political landscape of Nigeria and particularly for the SDP family.
He remarked that Senator Akwashiki represented a unique era of public officials who viewed politics as a duty rather than a privilege, and governance as a moral responsibility instead of a means to gain power.
"His loss compels us to articulate our memories, for to remember is to honor a life well-lived," stated Adebayo.
Reflecting on Akwashiki’s journey, Adebayo acknowledged that the late senator’s ascension from humble beginnings to national significance was propelled by discipline, education, and a steadfast belief in the dignity of the common individual.
Adebayo noted that Akwashiki’s education in Nigeria’s public institutions, particularly his early tenure at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), provided him with insights into governance, emphasizing its necessity for the overall welfare of the populace.
This foundational experience, Adebayo mentioned, significantly influenced his legislative approach.
According to Adebayo, Akwashiki’s political journey within Nasarawa State—from serving in the House of Assembly to his role in the National Assembly—was built on the trust he cultivated, the effective representation he provided, and a leadership style rooted in active listening.
As the Majority Leader and subsequently Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Akwashiki exemplified an uncommon blend of firmness and teamwork, according to Adebayo.
This principle carried forward into his time in the Senate, where he prioritized significance over mere visibility. "In his roles as chair of committees focused on Labour and Employment, Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, and National Defence, he viewed leadership as stewardship, understanding that every policy decision has human impact," Adebayo remarked.

"He was approachable without being frivolous, resolute without arrogance, and ambitious without losing sight of service," Adebayo expressed.
Adebayo also remarked that even in moments of dissent, Akwashiki upheld respect, firmly believing that democracy thrives not from agreement, but from disciplined disagreement, always aimed at the national interest.
"He engaged his constituents, carrying them along, rather than leading from above," he added.
Adebayo urged that Akwashiki’s passing should motivate those still active in public roles to introspect on whether they are cultivating legacies or simply filling positions of power.
He concluded that Akwashiki left a legacy extending beyond mere service records—he established a benchmark for representation grounded in ethics, humanity, and accountability.
"For his widow and children, no public accolade can replace the loss of a husband or father," Adebayo stated, conveying hope that they find solace in the knowledge that Akwashiki's life positively influenced many.
To the constituents of Nasarawa North, he remarked, "You did not merely select a senator; you elevated a statesman."
Adebayo encouraged members of the SDP, emphasizing that while they lost a foundational figure, they also inherited a legacy that must be upheld through actions reflective of Akwashiki’s example.
