Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has issued a warning to All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen, demanding that they vacate their offices. He stated that their self-assumed tenure expired on October 22, 2025, and cannot be extended as per constitutional provisions and Supreme Court rulings.
In his statement, Adeleke accused these chairmen of unlawfully occupying local council offices and misappropriating public funds despite their tenure having ended. He characterized their actions as an infringement on local government autonomy and a breach of state regulations.
"Local government autonomy should not translate to the unwarranted appropriation of funds designated for local healthcare workers, educators, and pensioners," he highlighted, noting that his administration has continued to offer support to local council workers to avert hardship.
Adeleke affirmed that those in the councils currently have no legal authority and must vacate their positions without delay. Regarding criticisms from opposition parties following his earlier broadcast, he maintained that the tenure in discussion was never lawful and officially terminated last year.
“In a democratic society, individuals who are not elected cannot claim authority over local governments or manipulate public funds. It is unacceptable to extend your tenure even for a single day without repercussions,” he stated, also urging security agencies not to shield individuals with expired mandates.
The governor pointed out that the APC officials' acknowledgment of their expired tenure and their pursuit of judicial extension should have compelled them to step down from their posts while awaiting court proceedings.
"Simply filing a lawsuit does not mean your tenure has been prolonged. The constitution does not permit it," he asserted, accusing the APC in Osun of serious legal violations.
Additionally, Adeleke alleged that a commercial bank had collaborated with unauthorized individuals to manage local government accounts, describing this as a criminal act that is currently under court examination.
He mentioned that he had alerted the Presidency about the ongoing situation, cautioning against invoking President Bola Tinubu’s name to legitimize what he termed as illegality and abuse of power. He also called for the protection of democratic principles in the state.
