Arsenal and Atletico Madrid secured a 1-1 draw in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie, held at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium in Spain. The encounter was largely decided by two penalty kicks.
Viktor Gyokeres converted a penalty for Arsenal, while Julian Alvarez did the same for Atletico Madrid. However, Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, along with Atletico's Antoine Griezmann, squandered several significant chances that could have given Diego Simeone's team a crucial first-leg advantage.
Following a high-scoring first semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, the match between the two defensively oriented teams failed to match that spectacle. Instead, the game featured two penalties and a standout performance from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Ademola Lookman of Nigeria also missed opportunities that might have secured a victory for the home side.
Both teams created early chances. Piero Hincapie's shot went high and wide after a cross from Noni Madueke, and David Raya made a brilliant save to deny Julian Alvarez.
Madueke also had an attempt that narrowly missed the far post, just before Viktor Gyokeres earned a penalty which he successfully converted, giving Arsenal a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Atletico responded with their own penalty early in the second half. Julian Alvarez calmly dispatched his spot-kick in the 56th minute, marking his tenth Champions League goal of the season and restoring parity.
The home team had several opportunities to take the lead, but Antoine Griezmann's attempt hit the woodwork, and Lookman's efforts were thwarted by Raya.
Arsenal had a penalty awarded for a foul on Eberechi Eze later overturned due to a simulation call. Mikel Arteta's side managed to hold on for the draw, setting up a decisive second leg at the Emirates Stadium next week.
