Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Osun State Assembly, along with 24 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially announced their defection to the Accord Party. The announcement was made through a statement by the Speaker's spokesperson, Olamide Tiamiyu, in Osogbo on Friday.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the assembly comprises a total of 26 members, consisting of 25 from the PDP and one from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tiamiyu revealed that the decision for this political shift was reached during a parliamentary meeting among the lawmakers. He stated that the legislators had resigned from the PDP weeks prior, following deep deliberations and consultations with their supporters, political allies, and other stakeholders.
The lawmakers resolved to join the Accord Party, expressing their belief that it offers a more stable, inclusive, and people-focused platform to serve their constituents better.
They articulated their desire for a political affiliation that aligns with their core values, stating that their decision to join Accord aims to ensure ongoing governance and spur development for the citizens of Osun State.
In their statement, they reassured their commitment to quality representation, transparency, and responsive leadership, emphasizing their unwavering support for Governor Ademola Adeleke. The lawmakers encouraged supporters and well- wishers to join them as they embark on this new political journey.
The gathered lawmakers subsequently convened at the Government House Banquet Hall to meet with the governor and senior members of the Accord Party, where Speaker Egbedun formally declared their defection. Notably, Governor Adeleke had also switched from the PDP to the Accord Party on December 9, 2025.
