Hossam Hassan, the coach of the Egypt national football team, conveyed a sense of pride in his players despite their 4-2 penalty shootout defeat against Nigeria in the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff.
The match concluded without any goals during regular time, leading to Nigeria being awarded the bronze medal after they successfully converted more penalty kicks.
Hassan remarked on the game's balance, highlighting that both teams exhibited tactical discipline and organization. "It was an evenly matched contest against a resilient Nigerian side, with both teams maintaining focus and structure throughout," he stated.
The coach noted that while Egypt performed well during various stages of the match, they ultimately fell short, emphasizing that small details often dictate outcomes in such critical matches. "Today, the penalties were the deciding factor," he added.
Moreover, Hassan praised his team's mentality and commitment during the tournament, expressing his contentment with their overall performance. "My players displayed remarkable character, dedication, and discipline. I am very proud of their efforts," he shared.
He also mentioned that the squad maintained their confidence and resolve even under pressure. "They fought until the last minute, and that unwavering spirit is something I take pride in as a coach," Hassan remarked.
He acknowledged penalty shootouts as an integral aspect of contemporary football. "Penalties form a part of the game. Sometimes they go in your favor, and other times they don't. It’s essential to accept it and move on," he stated.
Looking forward, the coach expressed optimism for Egypt's future. "This experience will strengthen us. We will learn, grow, and continue striving for success in the future," concluded Hassan.
