An Air Canada Express regional jet was involved in a collision with a ground vehicle during its landing approach at LaGuardia Airport on Monday evening. This incident resulted in immediate emergency measures and significant disruptions to flight operations.

The aircraft, identified as a CRJ-900, was arriving from Montreal when it struck the vehicle, reportedly at a speed of approximately 24 miles per hour. The jet is operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional affiliate of Air Canada.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded by implementing a ground stop for all flights at LaGuardia, effective until 0530 GMT, indicating an emergency scenario with a strong possibility of extension.

As the situation unfolded, incoming flights were redirected to other airports or sent back to their places of origin, reflecting the urgent response required by authorities.

An advisory issued to air traffic personnel also suggested that the airport might remain closed until 1800 GMT, but further specifics regarding the nature of the emergency were not disclosed.

Unverified videos circulating on social media have purportedly shown damage to the front of the aircraft, with the plane positioned at an unusual angle; however, Reuters could not verify the authenticity of these images at this time.

The New York Fire Department confirmed it was addressing reports of the incident at LaGuardia Airport involving both a plane and a vehicle, but additional details were not immediately available.

Neither Air Canada nor the FAA offered comments when contacted for further information.
