Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed his commitment to the legislative support for the creation of Anioma State, proposing that Asaba be designated as its capital.
Akpabio made this declaration on Wednesday while addressing party officials at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, Delta State, with the presence of governors and prominent political leaders from the region.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu's administration is dedicated to this initiative, characterizing it as an integral part of broader strategies aimed at ensuring equality, development, and efficient governance.
He pointed out that, should Anioma State be formed, Warri is set to become the capital of the remaining Delta State, based on its existing infrastructure advantages.
"Warri already boasts vital infrastructure, including an airport, government offices, significant oil companies, a seaport, and a stadium," he remarked.
Akpabio further articulated that the push for the creation of Anioma State is a historically justified movement, reflecting an enduring demand for fair and balanced development.
He acknowledged that the proposal advocated by Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta North has garnered ongoing attention within the National Assembly.
"The Senate is fully in favor of the initiative led by Senator Ned Nwoko," Akpabio stated. "Anioma State will be established, with Asaba as its capital."
He added that the formation of the new state would yield substantial socio- economic and governance benefits, including decentralization and enhanced administrative effectiveness.
"This action will pave the way for a new epoch of development and shared prosperity for all communities involved," he asserted. "With Asaba as the capital of Anioma State, Warri will serve as the capital for the new Delta State."
Akpabio also urged for solidarity across the South-South zone and encouraged stakeholders to rally behind the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, stating that such support will fortify national unity and sustainable progression.
Meanwhile, Senator Ned Nwoko previously indicated in November 2025 that the advocacy for Anioma State has gained considerable traction, with constitutional amendment procedures in progress and support from the presidency.
He further claimed that 97 senators had endorsed the initiative, deeming the level of support as unprecedented.
