Authorities in Akwa Ibom State have taken into custody four persons suspected of involvement in attempted murder, property destruction, and activities associated with cultism within the Oruk Anam Local Government Area. This development was announced by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
The state's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, released a statement on Friday, March 20, 2026, detailing the arrests. The operation, which included detectives and was guided by intelligence, occurred in Ikot Asukpong village on March 20.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as John Samson, Emmanuel Asuquo, Idorenyin Umoh, and Okon Akpan. A locally manufactured pistol and two long guns were found in their possession during the operation, supporting the accusations of their engagement in violent criminal acts.
The police statement highlighted the successful operation: "The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has achieved a significant operational success in its continuous efforts to cleanse the State of violent crimes and criminal elements."
It further explained the basis for the action: "Following the approval of a petition concerning alleged attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult- related activities, Command operatives acted with precision and professionalism."
"Acting on credible intelligence, detectives successfully apprehended four suspects on the 20th of March, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area," the statement continued.
The identities and ages of the suspects were provided as: John Samson, male, 45 years; Emmanuel Asuquo, male, 50 years; Idorenyin Umoh, male, 22 years; and Okon Akpan, male, 70 years.
"During the operation, one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns were recovered from the suspects, further substantiating allegations of their involvement in violent and unlawful activities."
The Command assured the public of continued peace in the area: "The Command wishes to assure members of the public that the situation in the area remains calm and under control, as proactive measures have been put in place to forestall any breach of peace."
An ongoing investigation is being conducted, and the suspects are expected to face charges in court once the investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare (fsi), reaffirmed the Command's dedication to protecting lives and properties across Akwa Ibom State.
"Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to aid in the fight against crime," the CP added.
