Alan Cumming has addressed the controversial incident that transpired at the British Academy Film Awards in February, where a racial slur was audibly exclaimed. Referring to the event as a "trauma triggering s***show," Cumming, who served as the host on February 22, shared a new apology via Instagram on Tuesday, expressing his remorse for the ramifications of the occurrence.

He conveyed his regret for the “pain Black individuals have endured upon hearing that word echoed globally” and extended apologies to the Tourette’s community for the adverse reactions stemming from the incident, highlighting what he deemed as the world’s "lack of understanding and tolerance" regarding the neurological condition.

During the awards, activist John Davidson had used the N-word, which led to widespread condemnation. Although the BAFTAs were recorded in advance, the derogatory term was aired uncensored in the final broadcast.

Cumming also appeared to voice his discontent towards both the award organisers and the broadcaster. He criticized the choices made to allow slurs to be aired while simultaneously censoring free speech, insisting that “all trauma must be recognized and honored.”

The situation escalated further when it was revealed that the BBC had allegedly cut out the “Free Palestine” segment from filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr.’s speech, while leaving the racial epithet untouched.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts later accepted “full responsibility” for placing presenters Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo in what they called a “very difficult situation.” In a subsequent apology, the organization stated they would learn from the incident amid growing public criticism. While Cumming had tried to address the matter live during the ceremony, his initial apology seemed insufficient to ease public outrage.

Following the incident, Davidson expressed gratitude to Cumming for his recognition of the occurrence during the awards. “I was uplifted by the applause that followed this announcement and felt a sense of acceptance and understanding in an environment that is usually challenging for me,” he remarked.

This event has reignited discussions surrounding broadcast standards, editorial choices, and public comprehension of neurological disorders, as well as the obligations of both live and pre-recorded events in managing offensive language.
