Alison Hammond is receiving significant criticism on social media following her comments about Prince Andrew’s arrest while co-hosting ITV’s This Morning.

The 51-year-old presenter was alongside Dermot O'Leary when news surfaced about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest at his given residence in Sandringham, where he was detained on allegations of misconduct in public office.

Engaging in a discussion with broadcaster Nick Ferrari and journalist Sonia Sodha, Hammond remarked that such a decision to arrest a member of royalty was an unusual occurrence. Nevertheless, she raised questions about the arrest's timing, highlighting that it coincided with Andrew's 66th birthday. “Surely, they could've done it yesterday, the day before his birthday,” she remarked, prompting backlash from viewers.

Her comments did not go unnoticed, as several individuals took to social media to express their criticism. One user, @Rise_and_grind7, commented, “Alison says the stupid part out loud again.” Another user, @TheQueenB76, noted, “Alison saying ‘surely they didn’t have to arrest him on his birthday. What a weird comment about an ‘alleged’ predator.’”

A third commenter, @Dayjur11, humorously suggested, “Imagine if Alison was a police officer. Her boss: ‘We’re arresting Prince Andrew in the morning.’ Alison: ‘We can’t be doing that bab, it’s his birthday tomorrow, he’s probably made plans.’”

Additionally, another critic, @Sane_Steve, referred to Hammond as an “unprofessional idiot” for her remark, labeling it “stupid.”

Andrew was taken into custody at 8 AM on February 19 by officers from Thames Valley Police, who confirmed ongoing searches at locations in Berkshire and Norfolk.

Social media backlash against Alison Hammond's comments

A police spokesperson stated, “The man remains in police custody at this time. We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance. Please also remember that this case is now active, so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.” Andrew has previously denied any allegations against him.

In the wake of his brother's arrest, King Charles III expressed his unease, stating, “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.”

He stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the matter by the appropriate authorities, asserting that the police have the “full and wholehearted support and co-operation” of the royal family and concluded, “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”
