The Government of Anambra State has apprehended a woman identified as Mrs. Osinachi Edeh for allegedly inflicting severe burns on her ward, a student named Amah Miracle, based on unfounded suspicions regarding her relationship with a boy.
Reports indicate that Mrs. Edeh used a hot iron to inflict painful burns on the body of the Junior Secondary School 3 student attending Community Secondary School in Agulu, located in Anaocha Local Government Area. This act came about after the girl reportedly used her guardian's phone to communicate with her cousin, which Mrs. Edeh overheard and mistakenly interpreted as flirtation.
The Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, took decisive action after noticing the severe injuries on the girl’s body. Teachers discovered the burns and notified the authorities about the incident.
The young girl revealed that in a moment of anger, what began with a mere slap escalated into her guardian using a hot iron to scorch her skin all over, causing her intense suffering.
The Commissioner expressed her commitment to ensuring justice, stating, "I swear on my honour, this woman will face the wrath of God and the justice of man if found guilty."
She further reiterated the government’s dedication to the welfare of children, indicating that the safety of every child is paramount under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
This unfortunate occurrence has sparked discussions regarding the importance of safeguarding children in the community and the role of guardians in their upbringing.
