The Anambra State Police have announced the arrest of three suspects involved in robbery activities in Ogidi, located in the Idemili North Local Government Area. Firearms were also recovered during their operation.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, made this information public during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Awka.
According to Superintendent Ikenga, the suspects were taken into custody by officers from the Rapid Response Squad stationed in Awkuzu, following diligent investigation and interrogation. The arrests occurred on March 21.
He stated, “The command has recorded significant successes due to continuous investigations.”
Further developments revealed the apprehension of the alleged ringleader, identified as Chukwuka Anene, a 46-year-old male, who admitted to supplying arms to the gang.
Anene led police to a location in Ogidi where additional firearms and body armor were found.
The recovered items included two pump-action guns, two locally manufactured Beretta pistols, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and seven live cartridges. Also found in the hideout were a beret, a knife associated with a cult group, and body armor.
Ikenga remarked that efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend other gang members who remain at large, underlining the police's commitment to the safety and security of the public and their properties.
He encouraged citizens to assist the police by providing reliable information to assist in the fight against crime.
