A compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle caught fire and exploded at the Mando motor park in Kaduna State, causing damage to at least two cars. The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, according to an eyewitness working at the garage.
He reported that the blast originated from a bus utilizing CNG and affected two luxury buses belonging to a transport company. These vehicles have since been removed from the park.
The worker emphasized that the explosion did not result in any fatalities or injuries, as there were no passengers inside the affected bus at the time. However, the sound of the explosion caused considerable alarm among individuals present at the park.
The explosion was not a bomb blast, as some reports suggested, but rather an incident related to the vehicle's gas system, he clarified.
Normal operations have since resumed at the motor park, which is situated near the Air Force base in Kaduna.
The Kaduna State Police Command later issued a statement confirming that the event at the Mando Motor Park was a gas-related incident involving a luxury bus, not a bomb blast. According to the Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the incident took place around 3:00 a.m. at Silver Luxury Travel, a transport company that uses gas-powered vehicles.
The police received reports of a loud sound from the location, which sparked speculation of an explosion. Detectives were promptly dispatched to the scene.
Initial police findings indicate that the explosion involved a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered luxury bus. The blast was attributed to an overfilled gas tank.
The authorities confirmed that the damaged vehicles were removed and the area secured. No injuries or significant property damage were reported, and the motor park has returned to its normal operational status.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Muhammad Rabiu, has mandated a comprehensive investigation to determine the precise cause of the incident and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Additionally, the Police Bomb Disposal Unit was present at the scene as a precautionary measure.
The Command has appealed to the public to verify information, especially concerning security matters, before sharing it to avoid generating unnecessary panic.
