In Calabar, Cross River State, an angry mob lynched an individual suspected of vandalizing transformers and electrical cables. The event transpired around 5:00 AM on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, on Mayne Avenue within Calabar South Local Government Area, as reported by onlookers.
Residents indicated that a local vigilante group apprehended the suspect, while his accomplices managed to escape from the scene.
The community, particularly neighborhoods like Mayne Avenue and Palm Street, has been plagued by frequent power outages attributed to consistent instances of transformer vandalism.
Eyewitness Amos Akpan noted that locals had recently pooled resources to replace components stolen from a transformer, only to see more parts taken again just this week.
Akpan accused the vandals of intentionally targeting electricity infrastructure, asserting that their actions have resulted in ongoing blackouts in the community.
He claimed that the deceased was linked to a group known for cable theft and transformer sabotage in the area.
Police officials arrived later to the scene to remove the remains of the victim. The spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Eitiokpa Sunday Akata, confirmed the incident and indicated that further details would be provided in due time.
