Liverpool's coach Arne Slot has voiced his excitement about the return of Mohamed Salah to the team, following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations match against Nigeria, even though there was a recent disagreement between the two.
The tensions arose from an intense post-match interview after Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Leeds United, where Salah claimed he felt the club had betrayed him and indicated that his relationship with Slot had deteriorated. The 33-year- old forward has remained on the bench for three matches and has not been a starter for Liverpool since November.
"Firstly, he has another important match for Egypt on Saturday," Slot informed reporters ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming home match against Burnley. "I’m pleased that he’s returning. Even if I had 15 forwards, I would still welcome his return."
Slot emphasized the advancement of the team this season, highlighting their unbeaten streak of 11 matches across all competitions; however, he noted that five draws in the Premier League during this period have left the champions in fourth place, trailing leaders Arsenal by 14 points.
"Ideally, we would have 11 wins in a row rather than just an unbeaten streak of 11 games. That’s our objective," Slot explained. "From our early struggles, especially after conceding four goals to PSV Eindhoven, we have significantly improved, but there is still space for further advancements."
The Dutch manager recognized the expectations placed on Liverpool to achieve Champions League qualification, reminiscing about the team’s strong beginning to the season contrasted with the points that have been lost in subsequent games.
Slot also praised Andy Robertson's professionalism, as his position in the squad has diminished due to Milos Kerkez's emergence as a starter. The 31-year-old Scotland international has yet to confirm his future with the club, but Slot applauded his maturity and dedication.
"I must commend Andy for his comments, which were very mature," Slot remarked. "I’m genuinely pleased that he continues to find joy in his current role and acknowledges his importance to this club throughout the years, and still does today."
With Salah expected to return for Egypt’s third-place match against Nigeria on Saturday, Liverpool is hopeful that their star player can help them regain their form and reduce the gap behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings.
