Four astronauts have successfully returned to Earth after achieving a groundbreaking medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS).
Crew-11 exited the Dragon Endeavour capsule at approximately 01:30 local time (09:30 GMT) near the California coast, concluding a nearly 11-hour journey back to Earth.
The crew, which includes NASA astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, along with Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, has been reported to be in “good spirits” and will receive medical evaluations after their early return, according to NASA.
Dr. Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, remarked that it will be a relief and a ‘luxury’ for the crew to rest in their own beds, emphasizing they will appreciate simple comforts.
This situation represents the first instance of astronauts being evacuated from the ISS due to a medical concern since the station's inception in 1998.
NASA will hold a press conference to discuss the crew’s early return, offering updates on their health and the reasons for the evacuation.
The successful splashdown highlights the agency's capability to implement emergency protocols for astronauts in orbit, ensuring their safety even in extraordinary circumstances.
