The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has leveled a four-day ultimatum at the Federal Government, urging for the swift enactment of a recently sanctioned salary scale for university lecturers nationwide.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, made this proclamation on Thursday during a public address at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi.
Piwuna indicated that the union is demanding the government commence payments under the revised salary framework which had been previously agreed upon after extended discussions between both entities.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he asserted.
The ASUU leader emphasized that this demand is part of broader initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of university educators and addressing longstanding issues regarding insufficient compensation, which he argues have spurred a brain drain and deteriorating standards within Nigeria’s higher education system.
He further noted that despite multiple agreements formed with the government in the past, the actual enforcement has been erratic, leading to recurrent conflicts and strikes.
