Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed his admiration for Senator Binos Yaroe and eight other senators who have recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He lauded their decision as a courageous act in defence of Nigeria's democratic landscape.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Abubakar commended the lawmakers for prioritizing national interests over political coercion. He stated, “I commend Senator Binos Yaroe and the eight distinguished senators who boldly aligned with the ADC on Saturday, not for personal gain, but in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy.”

Atiku highlighted that their choice to support the opposition, at a time when many politicians are reportedly facing pressure to join the ruling party, demonstrates significant courage and strong conviction.

He remarked, “At a time when many are being coerced into the ruling party, their decision to stand with the opposition is a powerful statement of courage, conviction, and commitment to national interest.”

The former vice president emphasized the vital role of a robust opposition in a functioning democracy, noting its importance in holding the government accountable.

“Democracy without credible opposition is democracy in name only,” Abubakar asserted.

He further suggested that the senators’ action bolsters the collective efforts advocating for accountability, effective governance, and a brighter future for all Nigerians.

“Their presence strengthens our collective voice for accountability, good governance, and the future Nigerians deserve,” he added.

Abubakar concluded by saying that the nation benefits when leaders opt for principles over political pressures.

“When leaders choose principle over pressure, the nation wins. Together, we will build a stronger, more just, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he declared.

This publication had previously reported that the nine senators had defected to the ADC, positioning the party as the leading minority in the National Assembly.
