Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially stepped down from his position as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
This resignation follows Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri's recent departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports from Daily Trust revealed that Fintiri made his membership change known on Friday as he collected his APC membership card in K/Wuro Ngayandi Ward, located in the Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
In addressing his defection, Fintiri noted he made the decision after extensive discussions with various stakeholders, aimed at fostering long- lasting stability, progress, and development for the residents of Adamawa.
The Adamawa State House of Assembly Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, alongside 13 other lawmakers, had previously announced their resignation from the PDP as well.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, directed to Governor Fintiri, Adamu Atiku indicated that his resignation would take effect immediately.
"I write to formally tender my resignation from the office of Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, effective from today, 2nd March, 2026," he stated.
He explained that this decision was made after thorough personal reflection and careful consideration of his options.
Adamu expressed his time in the role as an exceptional privilege, highlighting the contributions he made towards the infrastructural development and progress of the state.
He extended his gratitude to Governor Fintiri for the trust and confidence shown in him during his tenure, affirming that the support he received was instrumental in performing his duties effectively.
"I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me throughout my tenure. Your support provided the enabling environment to carry out the responsibilities of the office with dedication and commitment," he added.
Additionally, he thanked the people of Adamawa for their prayers and support during his service.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Monday regarding his resignation, Adamu Atiku also acknowledged his parents for their guidance and encouragement throughout his service journey.
"I express heartfelt gratitude to my parents, His Excellency, @atiku Abubakar and Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar, for their moral guidance, prayers, and blessings, which strengthened me throughout this journey of service," he noted.
He emphasized that his resignation does not signify an end to his commitment to public service but rather marks the commencement of a new phase focused on broader developmental engagement and ongoing contribution to Adamawa's unity, growth, and advancement.
On the previous Friday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a statement from his media office, commented on Governor Fintiri's switch to the APC, stating that the ruling party would face significant challenges in convincing Nigerians to vote for them in the upcoming 2027 elections.
He acknowledged that every politician has the right to choose their political affiliation but stressed, "However, anyone, including my son, who chooses to stand with Nigerians rather than the APC is standing on the side of patriotism."
