A notable assembly of opposition leaders took place in Abuja, featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, all preparing for a forthcoming world press conference.
These representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) plan to communicate with the media under the banner: "An Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy."
Sources report that discussions will center on the recently passed 2026 Electoral Act, which has sparked a contentious debate following its approval by the National Assembly and subsequent signing by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite the President's endorsement, there has been notable opposition to some aspects of the law. Opposition parties are particularly pushing for the implementation of an obligatory real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling stations directly.
Critics, including opposition parties and various civil society organizations, have condemned the clause permitting manual compilation of results in cases of network disruptions, asserting that it threatens electoral integrity and transparency.
Other significant figures also in attendance included former Governor of Cross River State Liyel Imoke, Rauf Aregbesola, a former Governor of Osun State and ADC National Secretary, Ralph Nwosu, the former ADC National Chairman, Senator Dino Melaye, and others.
The conference was organized by leaders from Nigeria's key opposition political factions.
