As the 2027 general elections approach, Audu Maikori, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and social activist, has made a formal announcement of his intention to run for the House of Representatives seat for the Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Currently, this position is held by Amos Gwamna Magaji, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Health.

Maikori disclosed his political aspirations through his Instagram account, promoting a campaign mantra that emphasizes the principles of "Vision Action Results."

In detailing his motivation to enter the political arena, Mr. Maikori expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage, particularly his roots in Southern Kaduna.

He highlighted his legal career, which involved pivotal roles in various complex infrastructure projects, including the privatisation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the concession of Nigerian Ports, and the Abuja Mass Transit framework. Furthermore, he played a vital role in establishing Chocolate City as a leading music label in Africa.

Notably, Maikori previously served as the youngest board member and Project Convener on the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme Presidential Committee (SURE-P), contributing to the creation of jobs for 370,000 young Nigerians and providing internship opportunities for more than 23,000 individuals across the nation.

"Ai Namu ya dawo! (Our son has come home!) Today, I formally declare my intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency on the platform of the APC in the 2027 General Elections. Lokaci ya yi. The time is now," he stated in his announcement.

Prior to his foray into politics, the 51-year-old Maikori gained recognition for his outspoken critiques of governmental policies, particularly concerning the actions of the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

In 2017, he faced arrest in Lagos after the Kaduna State Government challenged a misleading social media post attributed to him. This incident led to him filing a N10 billion lawsuit against Governor El-Rufai and the state for allegedly infringing on his human rights.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja subsequently affirmed in 2020 that the Kaduna State Government had violated Maikori's rights when they moved him from Lagos to Kaduna, ultimately awarding him N10.5 million in damages.

Additionally, he has consistently voiced concerns regarding the ongoing crises in Southern Kaduna, the very community he aims to represent in the upcoming elections.
