Justin Trudeau, Canada's former Prime Minister, has drawn sharp criticism after images emerged showing him using a plastic cup during an outing at the Coachella music festival. This comes despite his government's previous implementation of bans on various single-use plastic items across Canada.
Online commentators have labelled the former leader a hypocrite following the circulation of footage, shared by his girlfriend, singer Katy Perry, which depicted them with red Solo cups. Many took to social media platforms to voice their displeasure.
One widely shared comment on X (formerly Twitter) stated, “Remember when Justin Trudeau banned plastic bags and straws for Canadians to ‘save the planet’? Now he’s posting pics using solo cups. Rules for thee, but not for me.” Another user expressed similar sentiments, writing, “This a–hole is drinking out of a plastic cup after banning them for the entire country.”
Trudeau's administration introduced a nationwide ban on a wide range of single-use plastics in 2019. While this policy targeted many problematic plastic items, it did not cover all types of plastic cups, a detail noted by some in the ensuing online discussion.
Despite the nuances of the legislation, the visual of Trudeau with a plastic cup quickly ignited widespread commentary. "Justin Trudeau, Jun. 10, 2019: I’m banning Canadians from using single-use plastics! Justin Trudeau, Apr. 12, 2026: Look at me smash booze from a solo cup at Coachella!" one user posted, highlighting the perceived contradiction.
Another comment highlighted the situation by asking, “All I see is plastic cups. Someone banned them up here in Canada. Who was that again?”
Trudeau stepped down as Prime Minister in early 2025. He and Sophie Grégoire- Trudeau had announced their separation the previous year, ending an 18-year marriage. He publicly confirmed his relationship with the 41-year-old singer Katy Perry in October 2025.
