Bandits Launch Attack on Immigration Officers, Kidnap One in Niger State

In a bold attack, armed bandits from the Republic of Benin targeted immigration officials in Niger State, resulting in the abduction of an officer. The incident occurred in Balia village as the officers were conducting their duties.

Armed bandits riding motorcycles from the Republic of Benin launched an assault on immigration officers stationed in Balia village, within Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

As per security analyst Zagazola Makama, these bandits intercepted the officers around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, while they were manning an immigration checkpoint en route to Babana Market.

During this confrontation, the assailants overpowered the officers, seized two AK-47 rifles, each equipped with 30 rounds of ammunition, and abducted Umar Yusuf, one of the immigration staff.

His associate, Unisa Shehu, managed to flee the scene unharmed, although he did not retain his weapon.

In response to the attack, security forces along with local vigilantes and hunters have been mobilized to the region, and efforts are currently underway to rescue the kidnapped officer and recover the stolen firearms.
