Barcelona has moved to the verge of securing the La Liga championship following a decisive 2-0 away win against Getafe on Saturday. The Catalan giants extended their lead at the top of the league standings to 11 points, after rivals Real Madrid were held to a draw.
With this result, Barcelona now needs just a win against Osasuna in their next fixture, coupled with a slip-up from Real Madrid against Espanyol, to be officially crowned champions for the second consecutive season.
Despite missing key wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha due to injuries, Hansi Flick's squad managed to overcome Getafe's defensive tactics. The home team initially disrupted Barcelona's attacking flow by employing numerous fouls, making it challenging for the visitors to create substantial scoring opportunities.
Dani Olmo had an early chance, embarking on a promising dribble into Getafe's half, but his shot veered wide of the far post.
The deadlock was broken just before halftime. Pau Cubarsí's strong tackle in midfield initiated a play that saw Pedri release a perfectly weighted through ball to Fermín López. López, who was wearing a protective mask following a recent injury, maintained his composure and calmly finished into the bottom corner of the net.
Following his goal, López celebrated by performing Yamal’s signature “304” gesture, dedicating the goal to his sidelined teammate.
In the second half, with Getafe compelled to push forward in pursuit of an equalizer, Barcelona found more open spaces. Goalkeeper David Soria made a vital save from an effort by Olmo, which originated from a cross by Jules Koundé. Koundé himself later directed a header from a João Cancelo delivery just off target.
After Martín Satriano posed a threat for the hosts, Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, sealed the victory for Barcelona.
Rashford was played through on goal by Robert Lewandowski in the 74th minute, and he coolly dispatched a low shot past Soria, effectively placing one hand on the La Liga trophy for Barcelona.
