The 2026 O’jez Ladder table tennis tournament commenced on Wednesday at the Ikeja Country Club's table tennis section, attracting over 300 players eager to compete.
This tournament is exclusively for members of the club's table tennis section, providing them a platform to demonstrate their skills and earn points that will contribute to the club's ranking system, aiming to identify the top 20 players.
Akeem Lekan Alli-Balogun, who serves as the secretary for the table tennis section, reported a record number of entries. This high participation necessitated an extension of the tournament's duration by two weeks.
"We started the competition on Wednesday, and members have been actively participating. This is a tournament that we all eagerly anticipate," Alli- Balogun stated.
He added, "The prestige associated with securing a spot in the top 20 ranking and having one's name displayed on the board is a major driving force for the players."
The competition is structured into various categories for both men and women, determined by playing ability and age. These categories include League One for highly-rated players, League Two for intermediate players, and separate divisions for veterans aged 55-65 and super veterans aged 65-80.
Joseph Odobeatu, the chairman and managing director of the O’jez entertainment group, a long-time sponsor of the tournament, expressed his pleasure in supporting the O’jez Ladder table tennis tournament.
"This event is one of our significant contributions to sports development within the nation, and it has always been a pleasure to witness members vie for recognition each year," Odobeatu remarked.
He continued, "As a table tennis player myself, having represented and won accolades for the Ikeja Country Club in numerous tournaments, it is always exciting to observe individuals competing and pushing their skills and limits."
The tournament's grand finale is scheduled to take place on April 30.
