Ikorodu City’s ambitions for the title have taken a severe hit following a staggering 4-0 loss to Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Week 28 match that took place at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The contest saw Bendel Insurance dominate the field, scoring three goals in the first half and concluding the rout in the 68th minute.
Alex Oweilayefa initiated the scoreboard in the 15th minute, followed by a goal from Udom Wisdom in the 24th minute, and Oweilayefa secured his second goal just twelve minutes later.
In other developments, Enugu Rangers overtook the league, reaching the top with 47 points after their 2-0 triumph over Nasarawa United at the “Cathedral”.
The “Flying Antelopes” took the lead in the 18th minute through their top goal scorer, Godwin Obaje, while Chidiebere Nwobodo added the second goal in the 26th minute to confirm their victory.
Meanwhile, Rivers United, who had previously dethroned Ikorodu City, now sit in second place with 46 points after narrowly losing 0-1 to Bayelsa United.
In Aba, Enyimba, former champions of Africa, narrowly escaped defeat in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw against 10-man Kun Khalifat, who were at the bottom of the table. The visitors shocked the home side by taking the lead in the 38th minute through James Ekebuike but were reduced to ten players in the 80th minute, enabling Ekene Awazie to net Enyimba's equalizer in the 87th minute.
In Ikenne, Remo Stars, now back at the Lekan Salami Stadium after a previous ban, benefitted from Hadi Haruna's brace to clinch a 2-0 win against Katsina United in what marked Coach Usman Abdallah's debut match as the NPFL defending champions.
In other fixtures, Kano Pillars stumbled to a 0-2 defeat against 3SC, while Warri Wolves managed a goalless draw with Niger Tornadoes in Lafia.
The final match of the week 28 fixtures will take place today in Jos, where Plateau United welcomes Barau FC in a highly anticipated matchup.
