The Benin Traditional Council has indicated that a queen residing within the Oba of Benin's palace may be at risk of expulsion due to an incident involving social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, known as Peller.
In a press release authored by the council's Secretary, Frank Irabor, the incident was characterized as a serious breach of protocol and a violation of the palace's sacred spaces. It was reported that Peller entered the palace on March 6, 2026, during a tour of the nation, without the necessary authorization.
The statement detailed, "Mr. Adelaja and his group accessed the palace without the appropriate permission... leading to significant embarrassment and a disturbance of the peace within the palace grounds."
The council underscored the sacredness of the palace, asserting, "The palace should not be treated as a public space or a venue for trivial content creation; it is the revered spiritual domicile of the Oba of Benin." A preliminary inquiry led to the confirmation that disciplinary measures are already being taken against those involved in the situation.
One of the chiefs associated with the matter has been indefinitely suspended, while a palace staff member, Mr. Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and is facing charges for allegedly facilitating the unauthorized entry.
Additionally, a queen who was present during the incident is undergoing disciplinary actions that may lead to her removal from the palace. The statement remarked, "Following Benin traditions and customs, these proceedings could culminate in her expulsion from the palace."
The council revealed that Peller has been summoned to appear before a committee of chiefs to clarify his actions, but he has not responded positively to this request. "Mr. Adelaja has not honored this invitation... He is required to submit a formal written apology to the palace for his unauthorized visit and for the ensuing embarrassment," the statement mentioned.
Noncompliance may trigger legal repercussions, with law enforcement agencies already informed. Emphasizing its authority, the council reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the traditions of the Benin Kingdom under the rule of Oba Ewuare II.
The council remarked, "Though some may seek to undermine our sacred institutions... they do so at their own risk," further asserting that it has the capability to address such transgressions and prevent similar incidents in the future.
