At least seventeen individuals have been confirmed dead following a violent assault on Mbalom, a community located in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. This incident marks the latest in a series of violent occurrences impacting the state's rural areas.

The attack transpired on Sunday, coinciding with the Easter celebrations. Eyewitness accounts describe how armed individuals infiltrated the community and indiscriminately fired upon villagers.

Local sources, who preferred to remain anonymous due to security concerns, reported that the attackers also set fire to several homes. This has led to a significant number of residents being displaced, with many still unaccounted for as search operations are underway.

"This is a deeply tragic event. Many people were caught completely by surprise, and a number are still missing," a resident shared.

Accounts from witnesses suggest the assailants launched their attack without any prior warning, prompting families to flee their homes into the surrounding bush amid the sounds of gunfire.

The recent fatalities have reignited serious concerns regarding the ongoing security challenges plaguing parts of Benue, where farming communities have been repeatedly targeted by armed groups.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia

In response, Governor Hyacinth Alia issued a statement on Sunday condemning the attack as "heinous" and unacceptable. His Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, conveyed the governor's condolences to the families affected and pledged that the government would bring those responsible to justice.

Governor Alia also highlighted what he termed a pattern of "calculated and selective attacks" occurring in certain areas of the state. He committed to reinforcing security measures to avert further bloodshed.

He further commended the efforts of security agencies in their response and urged them to intensify their operations to apprehend the perpetrators.

This incident is reminiscent of a previous deadly attack in the Mbalom area. In April 2018, suspected herders attacked a Catholic church in the same community during morning mass, resulting in the deaths of two priests, Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, along with at least 15 other individuals. Properties were also destroyed during that assault.

The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi had at the time voiced strong condemnation of the killings and criticised the perceived insufficient security response to the escalating violence.

Sunday's attack bears a striking resemblance to the 2018 event, with similar reports of fatalities, arson, and resident displacement.

Across Benue State, these types of attacks continue to disrupt the lives and livelihoods of people, particularly in agrarian communities, raising fundamental questions about the effectiveness of security provisions and the protection afforded to vulnerable populations.

Authorities have stated that investigations are in progress, and security agencies have initiated efforts to locate and apprehend those involved in the killings.
