In celebration of Benue State's 50th anniversary, Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has unveiled significant initiatives that involve honoring prominent leaders from the state's history and granting clemency to certain inmates.
The announcements were made during a live broadcast from the Government House in Makurdi on February 3, commemorating the state's Golden Jubilee.
Governor Alia revealed that the late General Murtala Muhammed, who was instrumental in the creation of Benue State on February 3, 1976, would be honored posthumously. He emphasized the need to recognize individuals who have made lasting contributions to the state.
He stated, "It is crucial to immortalize the heroes of our past and those who have helped establish a legacy for future generations to cherish."
He elaborated on the necessity of commemorating General Muhammed, as he played a key role during his tenure as military Head of State in establishing the state.
Additionally, in a move reflecting reverence for journalism, the governor announced the renaming of the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation to the Dan Agbese Printing and Publishing Corporation, in honor of the late Chief Dan Agbese, a notable journalist and statesman.
Moving forward, Governor Alia confirmed that various other prominent Benue citizens, both deceased and alive, would also be recognized through legacy projects named after them.
In his address, he mentioned a list of distinguished indigenes set to receive such honors, including the late Wanteregh Paul Unongo, Elder Isaac Shaahu, Senator Suemo Chia, General Atom Kpera, and the late Tashaku Oradi, among others.
As part of the anniversary events, the governor also exercised his power of mercy, extending clemency to inmates across different facilities in the state.
A total of 14 inmates received pardons, while one individual, Terhumba Aondona, saw his prison sentence reduced from ten years to four years.
The inmates granted clemency include Akaajime Imoter, Kongusu Terzugwe, Terngu Orshi, Ornaa Achagh, Zwa Achir, Terkimbi Amadu, Iorpenda Christian, Aondowaae Terlumun, Oriba John, Sughnen Terfa James, Akaahar Isaac, Ordam Thankgod, Gwayem Agba James, and Iorfa Terkimbi.
