Michael Carrick has the opportunity to create a strong initial impression in his interim role as Manchester United manager by attempting to thwart the Premier League title ambitions of local rivals, Manchester City, this Saturday.
City will be looking to narrow the gap on league leaders Arsenal to three points at Old Trafford, while Manchester United aims to secure vital points to enhance their chances of qualifying for Champions League play next season.
At the same time, at the bottom of the table, Thomas Frank of Brentford and West Ham's Nuno Espirito Santo are under pressure to salvaging their positions as their teams prepare for a crucial London derby.
AFP Sport examines three key points ahead of the weekend matches:
Carrick Takes on the Challenge Directly
Carrick lines up against the league's top two teams in his first two matches after taking charge of Manchester United.
"Big games are what we strive for - some present greater challenges than others, but that's why we’re here. We’ll confront it head-on," Carrick stated.
Prior to a challenging encounter against Arsenal next weekend, the former England midfielder has the opportunity to unite a season that is at risk of completely derailing. Recent results included an FA Cup exit to Brighton last week, along with just one win in six league outings following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Despite these challenges, the Red Devils are still very much in the race for a Champions League spot, sitting just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
Previously, Carrick remained unbeaten during a three-game interim period at Manchester United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit in 2021. He has since acquired significantly more managerial experience at Middlesbrough, although he was released in June after failing to gain promotion to the Premier League.
"I comprehend the requirements of this job and the responsibilities involved," Carrick said. "Now, I feel well-prepared to move forward and am optimistic about achieving success here."
Coaches on the Hot Seat
Both Frank and Nuno have endured speculation about their respective positions, yet they are still in charge for the upcoming encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday.
Spurs have only managed to win four out of their last 17 games across all competitions, resulting in a slip to 14th place in the Premier League and elimination from both domestic cups.
Frank is on the verge of joining a lengthy list of North London managers who have struggled, while Nuno, who was dismissed just 17 games into his tenure at Tottenham in 2021, faces the heat as well.
The Portuguese coach, who was previously sacked this season by Nottingham Forest, has only recorded a couple of victories in 16 Premier League fixtures since taking over at West Ham in September.
West Ham finds itself seven points from safety in 18th place, necessitating a swift turnaround in form.
Can Arsenal Overcome Forest?
Leading both the Premier League and Champions League, Arsenal looks set to pursue an unprecedented quadruple after victories in the FA Cup and League Cup this week.
However, Mikel Arteta’s squad will need to break a poor record at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest, who are eager to make amends for their recent performances.
Arsenal has only triumphed in one of its last five trips to Nottingham, a statistic that Forest's manager Sean Dyche is keen to change after his team faced elimination from the FA Cup by lower-tier Wrexham.
"Our first-half display was unacceptable, not just to me but to the badge itself," he expressed after the match, indicating his side's disappointing effort that saw them come back from 2-0 down to equalize to 3-3.
