Ondo State, established on February 3, 1976, during the military regime of General Murtala Muhammed, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. With a subdued commemoration marked by only modest events, the significance of this milestone may have gone unnoticed by many.
Witnessing one of the events organized by the Ondo State Government brought forth a blend of nostalgia and aspiration. The public lecture engaged influential figures and intellectuals in discussing the state's history, present challenges, and future dreams, serving as both a reminder and a call to action.
The surprise of reflecting on the transition from being part of Western State to establishing Ondo State struck many attendees. They recalled their parents’ sudden relocation from various parts of the Western region, along with the changes in their vehicle number plates from Western State to the new Ondo identifiers (OD, OY, OG), eliciting a sense of identity among younger generations who sought to connect with their origins.
Ondo's narrative encompasses various communities such as Akure, Owo, Ondo, Ikale, and Ilaje. These groups, united by their diverse cultures and aspirations, have experienced different political landscapes.
There is pride in Ondo’s history, being home to the first skyscraper in West Africa, the Cocoa House, situated in Ibadan. Moreover, Ondo is notable for the first discovery of oil in Nigeria at Araromi in 1908, although substantial oil production only began in 1968. Today, Ondo is recognized as the fifth-largest oil producer in Nigeria, generating around 60,000 barrels daily.
Yet, the state has immense untapped potential. With the world's second-largest bitumen reserves, an extensive Atlantic coastline, and plans for a deep-sea port capable of accommodating large vessels, Ondo’s prospects appear bright.
Education is another cornerstone of Ondo’s growth. The legacy of the Awolowo free primary education initiative has empowered its citizens, resulting in a lower poverty rate compared to the national average despite budgetary constraints.
The formation of Ondo State was championed by statesmen including Chief GBA Akinyede and Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, who advocated for its creation to remedy perceived neglect in the earlier administrative structure. Their collective efforts have significantly shaped the state's identity and governance.
One notable figure in the state’s journey is Ademola Adegoroye, whose efforts led to the approval of the Ondo seaport under Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, along with initiatives to enhance road infrastructure connecting Akure and Ado Ekiti.
The historical ties with Ekiti State, which was carved out from Ondo in 1996, also reflect the intertwined destinies of these regions, many founding fathers now holding different positions across both states.
This connection is poignantly illustrated by the story of two brothers, Prince Deji Adegoroye and Ambassador Bamidele Olumilua, whose paths diverged with the creation of Ekiti state.
Equally important are the contributions of civil servants, teachers, and nurses who returned to aid in building Ondo after its establishment. Their sacrifices often went unrecognized, yet they laid the groundwork for the state’s development alongside leaders like Michael Ajasin and Rotimi Akeredolu.
Ondo’s diaspora also plays a crucial role, represented by individuals excelling in various fields globally. Notable among them are paediatric surgeon Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye and music icon King Sunny Ade.
During the anniversary lecture, speakers Taiwo Oyedele and Olu Arowolo highlighted the need for a proactive approach in utilizing the state’s resources and strategic position to inspire future generations. They emphasized building a future where opportunities exist within Ondo, eliminating the need for migration in search of better prospects.
Looking ahead, Ondo’s government is called to harness its abundant resources and engage experts from its diaspora to cultivate a prosperous future marked by innovation and strategic planning. As noted, the vision for Ondo must be backed by wise leadership to ensure the state thrives in its next chapter. The state stands at a pivotal moment, and with commitment and intelligence, it can achieve remarkable advancements.
