In an effort to enhance religious harmony, Christian inhabitants of Jos have been actively sharing meals with their Muslim neighbors in the Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas throughout Ramadan.
The volunteers, who have maintained this tradition since the beginning of the Ramadan fasting period, prepare and hand out meals to the Muslim faithful at various localities and mosques for breaking their fast.
They emphasize that humanity is paramount, encouraging Nigerians to support each other regardless of their ethnic or religious identities.
Alexander Pious, one of the contributors, remarked, "Before my identity as a Christian, I was first a human being. Likewise, before my brother was identified as a Muslim, he too was a human being. Our shared humanity should take precedence, and I believe in spreading love among one another irrespective of our differences, hence the need to contribute towards elevating humanity."
Another benefactor, Kehinde Ronke, shared her motivation: "I was inspired by what my brother Alex is doing. It is important to help others without considering their backgrounds. You never know who may assist you in your times of need."
Members of the Muslim community have expressed gratitude for this initiative, deeming it impactful, especially for those less fortunate. Jafaru Ango, a community member, praised the gesture, saying, "I am pleased with their actions. They distribute food to Muslims in different mosques freely and without bias, which is appreciated by everyone."
Musa Ibrahim, another local, stated, "This initiative is a breath of fresh air, and we are all delighted by it. It illustrates that our religious variances should not separate us. The issues in Jos often stem from malicious individuals, rather than from true Christians or Muslims. We are thankful for these acts of kindness."
Jos and Plateau State have seen recurrent ethnic and religious discord in recent years, but both the donors and recipients believe such benevolent actions can help nurture peace, unity, and mutual respect among people from diverse backgrounds.
