The Centre for Justice and Accountability (CJA) has expressed its approval of the federal government's adoption of a "practical legal pathway" in the ongoing case against ex-Aviation Minister, Senator Stella Oduah.
Last week, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court acquitted Oduah of involvement in a N2.5 billion fraud case.
Moreover, the court also cleared Gloria Odita, a previous aide to Oduah, after the prosecution made known its decision to withdraw the charges against both individuals due to a plea bargain agreement, which included the reported recovery of the supposed illicit proceeds.
A statement released on Sunday and signed by Ochiaga Jude on behalf of the CJA commended the federal government's decision, stating it would help conserve judicial resources, minimize long litigation costs, and protect public interest.
The statement went further to acknowledge, “We especially applaud the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for implementing a resolution that embodies accountability and procedural efficiency.
“In a justice framework that has become overloaded with cases, plea bargaining, when executed transparently, can effectively reallocate limited judicial resources to address other urgent national issues,” remarked the Centre.
