Violence flared between fans of Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC on March 22, just before the anticipated Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park. The confrontations led to damage to the Sunderland team bus and tumultuous scenes outside the venue.

Supporters from both clubs reportedly exchanged blows and threw items at each other before the match began. The tension escalated when a contingent of Sunderland fans allegedly detached from a police escort and moved through an area populated with Newcastle supporters. Footage circulated on social media depicted law enforcement trying to manage the crowd of home fans while away supporters entered the stadium.

Images captured from the event revealed a shattered windscreen on the Sunderland team bus, which was struck by bottles upon arrival. Another bus carrying Sunderland supporters also faced projectiles such as bottles and cans during its departure from the stadium.

A police spokesperson mentioned: “We are aware of various videos circulating online depicting Newcastle United and Sunderland fans taunting each other. Overall, cooperation was observed, and we confirmed one arrest was made before the match began. We will maintain an increased police presence downtown.”

The Premier League match commenced at noon but faced a temporary halt five minutes into the second half due to complaints about discriminatory behavior from the audience. A representative of the Premier League noted: “This action is consistent with the Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocol enacted during the game. The incident at St James’ Park will be subjected to a comprehensive investigation.”
