Residents of Ogbagi-Akoko, a historic town in Ondo State, have voiced their anger and disbelief following a violent encounter involving their traditional leader, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo, and a man believed to be a phone thief.

This alarming episode took place around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

According to eyewitness reports and palace insiders, the royal leader was reportedly subjected to a harsh beating by a solitary attacker named Tope Adelani.

Described by local residents as both audacious and blasphemous, the assault left the revered monarch with several injuries, necessitating his immediate transfer to a private hospital for urgent medical care.

As reported by the government-owned Hope Newspaper in Ondo State, initial findings suggest that the suspect was not a stranger to the palace.

A source within the palace, wishing to remain anonymous due to the delicate nature of the event, mentioned that Adelani was known to visit the palace frequently, adding a layer of uncertainty to the reasons behind the aggression.

Further inquiries revealed that the suspect allegedly gained entry into the palace around 11:00 a.m. and is said to have stolen the monarch's mobile device without attracting attention.

Unexpectedly, he returned soon after, with circumstances escalating swiftly.

While Oba Ojo questioned Adelani about the theft, the suspect allegedly exhibited violent behavior and attacked the monarch, delivering multiple blows that resulted in visible injuries to the royal.

Family members of the monarch who tried to intervene were also reportedly assaulted during the altercation.

The suspect was ultimately subdued and taken into police custody for further investigation.

Community outraged over attack on Ondo monarch

The Ogbagi Youth Assembly (OYA) released a forceful statement condemning the assault, calling it intolerable and contrary to the standards and heritage of the Ogbagi people.

“We, the Ogbagi Youth Assembly, extend our support to His Royal Highness, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo, the Odagbaragaja III. We categorically reject any actions that discredit our esteemed traditional authority,” the statement affirmed.

The group expressed that the incident is not merely an attack on an individual but represents an affront to their collective history.

Additionally, the assembly urged the community, especially the youth from Egako Quarter and surrounding areas, to maintain peace and not resort to retaliatory actions that could heighten tensions.
