The Northern Progressive Agenda (NPA) has issued a warning regarding the perceived decline of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, indicating that this trend risks undermining the stability, unity, and prosperity of Northern Nigeria.
In a statement released by its National Secretary, Hon. Idris Ibrahim Kalgo, the group pointed out that the region faces various issues, including insecurity, economic difficulties, social disintegration, and a decrease in public trust. They underscored the necessity of democracy as the essential protection against these challenges.
"The North has historically influenced Nigeria’s political and ethical framework. Today, this responsibility requires a fresh clarity of intention and collective action," the statement remarked.
The NPA called upon progressive leaders in Northern Nigeria—regardless of their political affiliations—to move past divisions and collaborate for the collective good of the region. They also encouraged candidates and stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political parties to adopt unity, discipline, and a collective vision that rekindles public trust.
Furthermore, the group urged young people, women, and civil society representatives to actively participate in the democratic process, ensuring their voices contribute to shaping the future they seek. They emphasized that public institutions must maintain the rule of law, equity, and constitutional integrity without bias.
"This situation transcends mere political matters; it is a responsibility of our generation," Kalgo stated.
The NPA is dedicated to gathering thought leaders, policymakers, and emerging voices to devise practical solutions aimed at addressing insecurity, rebuilding trust, and harnessing the vast potential within the region.
The organization envisions a Northern Nigeria that is united in purpose, secure in practice, prosperous in opportunity, and progressive in perspective. "The moment for action is upon us. With unity, bravery, and strategic cooperation, we can fortify democracy and forge a future worthy of our shared heritage and aspirations," concluded the statement.
