I appreciate the publication of my lengthy tribute to Yakubu Mohammed. However, I need to correct a critical factual error that appeared in the article. In the sixth paragraph of my tribute, I stated that two out of the three graduates who joined Yakubu and me at the New Nigerian in 1976, Rufa’i Ibrahim and Sule Iyaji, were no longer alive.
Recently, I was informed that Iyaji is, in fact, alive and well. After obtaining his phone number from Professor Sam Egwu, who is the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, I spoke with him today. Iyaji not only confirmed his well-being but also mentioned that after working as a spokesperson for Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria, he ventured into politics and eventually became the Deputy Governor of Benue State when his Igala ethnic group was the second largest in the state, following the Tivs, prior to their relocation into Kogi State.
I have already apologized to Iyaji for mistakenly declaring him deceased while he was still alive. However, it is evident that I owe him and his family a public apology, which is the purpose of this letter.
