The court martial proceedings concerning a group of thirty-six military officers implicated in a thwarted coup attempt are scheduled to resume on May 8. Information from Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters indicates that the trial will continue on this date.
The military personnel are facing charges related to an alleged conspiracy to seize governmental power, an action that could have jeopardized over twenty- five years of sustained democratic governance in Nigeria.
Major General Samaila Uba communicated to AFP that the trial, which commenced last Friday at a military facility in Abuja, will proceed without media presence, maintaining its closed-door status.
During the inaugural session, the accused officers were formally presented before newly appointed justices, marking the official beginning of their legal proceedings within the military justice framework.
In a parallel legal development, six civilians are also currently undergoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing allegations linked to the same purported coup plot.
All six civilian defendants have entered pleas of not guilty to the charges laid against them. These legal actions occur at a critical juncture for Nigeria, which has upheld a consistent civilian administration since its return to democratic rule in 1999.
