Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who currently represents Kogi Central, has signalled her intent to vie for the senatorial seat once more in the 2027 general elections.
The lawmaker shared her decision on social media on Monday, confirming that she had responded positively to the appeals and strong backing from her constituents for another term.
"With deep gratitude, I hear your call and overwhelming endorsements to contest for the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial Elections. My response is ‘YES’," she posted.
She further pledged to continue her service to the district with heightened dedication.
This declaration initiates early political strategies in Kogi Central, a region that has seen competitive electoral battles in recent times.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made history as the first female senator from Kogi State. Her election victory was confirmed by the Court of Appeal after a protracted legal challenge concerning the 2023 senatorial election results.
Her political journey includes a prior attempt at the Kogi governorship in 2019. In the Senate, she has focused on legislative matters pertaining to finance, banking, and emerging sectors like cryptocurrency.
Her constituency projects have also spanned educational initiatives and the provision of basic amenities, such as distributing digital learning tools, installing solar-powered water systems, and setting up street lighting across communities in Kogi Central.
However, her tenure has faced some controversies. She is currently engaged in a legal battle against a N1 billion defamation judgment granted to former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello. Additionally, she was previously suspended from the Senate for six months due to allegations of misconduct.
Sources indicate that the senator has been receiving endorsements from PDP stakeholders and constituents, suggesting increasing support within the district's political landscape as the next election approaches.
Her announcement is anticipated to influence political realignments in Kogi Central as parties prepare for the 2027 electoral cycle.
Ex-Gov Bello emerges as potential rival
Akpoti-Uduaghan, associated with the Nyesom Wike-aligned faction of the PDP, may find herself competing against other prominent political figures from the district, including Yahaya Bello. Bello is reportedly considering a run for the seat under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Last December, Bello, who is currently facing corruption charges, indicated his interest in the senatorial position. He made this known during a meeting with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community representatives from the district at the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland.
