The President of the Court of Appeal, Monica Dongban-Mensem, has called for the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to be elevated to the status of a Judicial University. She expressed this desire on Thursday during a farewell luncheon for the Presiding Justice of the Abuja Division of the court, Hamma Barka.
Justice Dongban-Mensem explained that this initiative is intended to utilize the expertise of retired jurists in mentoring the next generation of judicial officers, thereby decreasing the financial burden associated with sending legal personnel for external training.
Justice Barka is set to retire on April 17, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The Appeal Court President lauded Justice Barka for his significant contributions and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. She stated, "He will undoubtedly be greatly missed by his brother Justices, the Bar, and the entire judicial community."
She further conveyed well wishes for his future, saying, "As His Lordship transitions into the next phase of life, we wish him continued fulfilment, good health and success in all his future endeavours."
"Thank you, my Lord, for your invaluable service and contributions to the Judiciary and our dear nation," she added.
Justice Dongban-Mensem also highlighted that 21 panels were formed for a Special Sitting, comprising 63 Justices from various Divisions of the Court, including herself.
"A total of 330 appeals, covering civil, criminal and commercial matters, were listed and heard before these panels," she noted, adding that the panels convened in scheduled sessions.
"While some panels sat within the Court of Appeal Headquarters and Abuja Division, others convened at designated courtrooms graciously made available within the Federal Capital Territory," she stated.
She extended her gratitude to partners and stakeholders whose collaborative efforts and support were instrumental in the successful organization of the special sitting.
Several colleagues of the retiring justice shared their appreciation for his paternal guidance and supportive relationships.
In his response, Justice Hamma Barka expressed his gratitude to the court for the opportunity to serve and thanked his colleagues for the excellent working relationship they shared.
