The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has recognised Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State with the Tourism and Hospitality Champion Award.

This prestigious honour was bestowed upon Governor Otu at the second edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Awards, held in Abuja on Wednesday. The governor was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Peter Odey.

In a statement delivered on his behalf, Governor Otu expressed that the award served as a significant motivation. He articulated, “This recognition is not merely an award. It is a compelling call to greater service, a charge to deepen our resolve in making Cross River the pride of tourism in Africa.”

Governor Otu extended his gratitude to the award organisers, acknowledging that the honour reflects the joint efforts of his administration and the resilient people of Cross River State. He stated, “I receive this honour on behalf of the good people of Cross River State, whose rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality remain the soul of our tourism identity.”

Salihu Abdullahi Dembos, the Chairman of BON, presented the award, praising Governor Otu and his administration for achieving “unprecedented and transformative strides in tourism and hospitality.” Mr. Dembos noted that the governor’s accomplishments distinguish him among his counterparts nationwide.

Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s commitment to tourism as a cornerstone of its economic strategy. He affirmed, “Tourism is not just leisure; it is a strategic economic driver.”

He further elaborated on the strategic investments being made in infrastructure, the enhancement of cultural attractions, and the cultivation of partnerships aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth and prosperity within the state.

Key initiatives highlighted by the governor include the revitalization of the well-known Carnival Calabar, which he aims to restore to its international prominence as a celebration of African creativity and culture. Additionally, significant efforts are underway to refurbish major tourist sites such as Obudu Mountain Resort, Agbokim Waterfalls, and the Marina Resort.

“These assets are being restored not just as sites, but as experiences,” Governor Otu explained. “Our goal is to offer visitors unforgettable encounters anchored in nature, comfort, and authenticity.”

Emphasizing the importance of connectivity for tourism, the governor added, “We are opening up our tourism corridors through strategic road infrastructure and integrated development. No destination can thrive in isolation; connectivity is key to unlocking value.”

Governor Otu described the award, which he noted was for 'Governor of the Year in Tourism and Hospitality,' as both a confirmation and an incentive. He concluded, “This honour challenges us to do more, to lead more boldly, and to inspire others through tangible results. We will not relent in setting new benchmarks for excellence.”

Earlier, BON Chairman Mr. Dembos had remarked that the Nigeria Broadcasting Awards are intended to recognise professionalism, impactful contributions, and leadership that supports the media.

In his response on behalf of other awardees, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, who received the BON Infrastructure governor award, commended the awards initiative as “a powerful encouragement for leaders to remain steadfast in delivering meaningful governance”.
