Five people have been murdered in incidents related to cult violence in the Ilemba-Awori area of Lagos.

The most recent confrontations took place during the weekend in the Ilemba- Awori and Shibiri localities within Ojo Local Government Area, where opposing cult factions clashed violently.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and cries for help as armed youths equipped with firearms, machetes, and various weapons roamed the neighborhoods.

Police presence in response to cult violence in Lagos

The conflict reportedly commenced in Etegbin and subsequently spread to Ilemba and Shibiri, causing many residents to evacuate.

One local resident mentioned that the first fatality occurred on Friday at the Etegbin waterfront, where a young man was shot shortly after finishing a football match.

"The assailants cornered him and executed him immediately," recounted the eyewitness.

Residents reported that the turmoil persisted into Saturday evening, with accounts of theft and looting.

A trader named Esther shared that she quickly closed her shop and fled with her daughter upon noticing armed youths approaching along Shibiri Road.

The deceased, reported to be males in their 20s to 30s, have been taken to a local mortuary.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the incident, revealing that 18 suspects have been apprehended and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti for further inquiry and prosecution.
