The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service, based in Owerri, has successfully intercepted a significant quantity of tramadol capsules and other pharmaceutical products. The seizure, valued at an estimated N1.05 billion, occurred along the Okada/Ofosu Expressway in Benin, Edo State.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the operation was a result of intelligence-driven and coordinated enforcement actions undertaken by the unit. The Customs Area Controller for FOU Zone C, Bishir Balogun, confirmed that the illicit items were discovered following the interception of a truck.

Mr. Balogun detailed that the operatives flagged down a truck suspected of carrying contraband. The driver reportedly attempted to evade arrest, eventually abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into the bush. A subsequent search of the truck revealed that the drugs were concealed among other legitimate goods in an effort to bypass customs scrutiny.

The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized consignment was reported to be N1.05 billion. The controller emphasized that this seizure demonstrates the Customs Service's unwavering commitment to preventing the influx and distribution of prohibited substances within the country.

He further stated that drugs such as tramadol and codeine are major contributors to drug abuse and fuel criminal activities nationwide. Mr. Balogun issued a stern warning to individuals involved in smuggling, assuring that the service will continue to deploy strategic, intelligence-led operations to protect public health and ensure national security.

Authorities have confirmed that the seized items are currently in custody, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illegal shipment.
