The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, amidst renewed security concerns affecting the Northeast region.
He was joined on this visit by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
Upon arrival at the Airforce Base, the ministers were greeted by the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, alongside the General Officer Commanding and Sector One Commander, Brig. Gen. Ugochukwu Unachukwu, in addition to other senior military officials.
This marked General Musa's inaugural visit to Borno since his appointment as Minister of Defence by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2025, according to reports from Daily Trust.
In recent months, the OPHK has intensified military operations aimed at combatting threats posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP militants.
In one notable event, troops thwarted a planned mass kidnapping of 150 travelers by Boko Haram militants along the Buratai–Kamuya route in Biu Local Government Area on Monday.
Additionally, over the weekend, OPHK reported that at least 38 suspected ISWAP militants were killed during an attack on a military installation in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area.
Musa and Matawalle also paid a visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, to extend their sympathies to the community following the recent triple bomb attacks attributed to Boko Haram insurgents.
During the visit, General Musa condemned the violent acts, emphasizing that such actions cannot be justified by any faith or righteous cause.
He stated, "Today, we are here to express our solidarity with the residents of Borno State where these unfortunate events occurred. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked me and the Minister of State for Defence to convey our condolences to the people of Borno."
He reassured the citizens that the federal government remains highly concerned about these attacks and is committed to preventing future incidents. "I want to assure the people of the state and the entire North-East that we are working to ensure such occurrences do not happen again. We are here to evaluate the situation and determine how we can act more effectively."
Matawalle echoed the commitment of the Federal Government towards eradicating insecurity throughout the nation, also commending the Shehu of Borno for his efforts, guidance, and dedication to fostering peace and stability in the state.
