Dele Momodu, well-known for his leadership at Ovation Magazine, has reported losing more than $500,000 due to an unsuccessful restaurant venture in Accra, Ghana.
The media figure shared insights into the setback while speaking on the podcast 'Building Wealth with Femi'.
"The time I lost money was when I tried to diversify," Momodu remarked. "People often believe that diversification guarantees profit. This is not the case; unless you're exceptionally lucky, you might end up losing a significant amount of money in such pursuits."
He elaborated that the dissolved enterprise was a restaurant known as 'House of Ovation', which he had launched with high hopes and considerable planning. "I ventured into the restaurant business in Accra, Ghana, resulting in a loss exceeding half a million dollars. I named it House of Ovation in Ghana, aiming for excellence with fine food and the best chefs," he stated.
Momodu noted that various challenges led to the downfall of the restaurant. "Everything that could possibly go wrong indeed did," he explained.
A considerable problem arose with imported kitchen equipment. He recounted spending $60,000 to a South African firm to customize his industrial catering supplies, including plates, cutlery, and refrigerators. "I invested $60,000 for a South African company to tailor my industrial kitchen equipment, which included plates, spoons, forks, knives, and refrigerators," he added.
Despite the investment, the equipment did not reach Ghana until January 2007 and remained stuck at the port for several years. "Do you know when I finally received it? It was only released to me in 2010," Momodu revealed.
Reflecting on the ordeal, he remarked it served as a costly but insightful lesson regarding the risks associated with business diversification.
