Police in Delta State apprehended a 24-year-old woman, Jessica Anthony, for allegedly enlisting suspected robbers to steal from her boyfriend, whom she has been dating on and off for two years.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, Jessica and her boyfriend were previously in a relationship, broke up, and later reconciled. They were reportedly intimate as recently as December 2025. The police revealed that Jessica, seeking financial gain from her boyfriend, conspired with her friends to stage a robbery.
"She, along with one of her friends, went to a notorious area in Warri to find someone who could assist with the robbery. They informed the individuals they approached that she wanted her boyfriend robbed, though it’s unclear if she disclosed that it was her boyfriend involved," Edafe stated.
Unbeknownst to Jessica, the person she contacted was a community leader working with police to eliminate criminals in the area. The leader recognized her boyfriend’s picture when he asked for it, and promptly reached out to him to inform him about the robbery plot.
The boyfriend, aware of the situation, requested the leader to act as if he was unaware and play along with the robbery plan.
Edafe explained that the robbers pretended to cooperate and requested N65,000 to procure the necessary equipment to execute the robbery. The suspects were given the funds they asked for.
"They went along with it, and she took them to the housing estate where her boyfriend resided, showing them his residence. It was during their exit from the estate that the boyfriend notified security personnel, leading to their arrest and subsequent confession," Edafe added.
During questioning, Jessica revealed that she orchestrated the robbery attempt in a bid to extort N7 million from her boyfriend, claiming the funds were needed to cover her sister's medical expenses. She mentioned knowing that her boyfriend possessed valuable gold jewelry that could be sold for a significant amount.
Jessica stated that her boyfriend had two pieces of gold jewelry valued at N4.2 million and N8.9 million respectively.
