A man has been arrested in Derbyshire, UK, on charges of attempted murder after a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians in the city centre, resulting in several injuries.
The incident left seven individuals with significant injuries, marking it as a particularly alarming event.
According to the police, the crash involved a black Suzuki Swift and took place around 9:30 PM on March 28 in the Friar Gate area.
Eyewitness accounts reported scenes of chaos, with many people lying in the street and on the sidewalk following the collision.
Local law enforcement apprehended a suspect shortly after the event. The arrested individual, a man in his thirties originally from India, is currently in custody.
He faces multiple charges including attempted murder, causing serious bodily harm, grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.
Photographs emerging from the scene on March 29 revealed the road scattered with personal belongings such as shoes and blankets.
Emergency medical teams treated the injured at the scene before transporting them to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, as confirmed by the police to Metro.
Authorities stated that while the seven individuals suffered various serious injuries, they do not pose a life-threatening risk and confirmed that there were no fatalities.
The ongoing investigation sees detectives remaining open to all possibilities regarding the motives behind the incident.
Derbyshire Constabulary reassured the public, indicating they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to community safety.
Nadine Peatfield, the leader of Derby City Council, expressed her shock at the occurrence, remarking, "I am horrified by the incident in our city centre on Saturday evening, where several pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle."
She continued, "My thoughts, alongside the city's, are with the injured, their families, and all who witnessed this tragic event. We are cooperating closely with Derbyshire Police as they investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward to assist their inquiry."
